Which tool suits which team?
OpenASO: free tracking and research on a Mac
OpenASO tracks keywords, rankings, competitors, ratings, and reviews for iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps, and stores everything locally. It is MIT licensed, and the source is on GitHub. Connect your AI assistant and it can run keyword research on your data.
Skip it if you need Google Play, a web dashboard for a team, or download and revenue estimates, none of which OpenASO offers. It also needs macOS 15 or later.
Astro: a paid Mac app for keyword work
Astro is the closest product to OpenASO, as a Mac app focused on keywords, with more than 60 countries listed. Read OpenASO vs Astro for a direct comparison.
Appfigures: app business data with ASO on top
Appfigures brings downloads, revenue, and subscriptions together, and ASO sits alongside that reporting. Note that the $9.99 plan includes no keywords, and that the higher Optimize plan, at $149.99/mo, is the one aimed at ASO. It suits teams that want their app business data in one place.
Mobile Action and ASOMobile: lower-cost web tools with Android
Both cover the App Store and Google Play at published prices. Check keyword and app limits on each plan, because the entry tiers are where they differ most.
AppTweak, AppFollow, and Sensor Tower: team and market intelligence
These suit larger teams. AppTweak publishes prices, shown in pounds at the time of checking. AppFollow hides prices on its pricing page, and its strength lies in review management. Sensor Tower is a market intelligence product sold through demos, so it fits companies that want competitor downloads and revenue estimates rather than a solo developer.
How should you choose?
Answer four questions in order, and most of the list falls away:
- Do you need Google Play? If so, rule out the Mac apps.
- What is your budget? At zero, go to free ASO tools.
- Will more than one person use it? A shared web dashboard is worth paying for when a team needs it.
- Do you want an AI assistant to use your data? If so, read how ASO MCP servers compare.
Before you pay for anything, try a free check with the keyword rank checker. It shows you what the data looks like for your own keywords.
Also worth a look are newer entrants such as Sonar, Ascope, and ASO Atlas, which publish prices between $7.50 and $29 a month. We checked their pricing but have looked less closely at their products.
